The 15 May 2015 became a historic moment for South Africa, when the coronation ceremony of the new Xhosa king, King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu (Ah! Zwelonke!)  at the Nqadu Royal Palace in Willowvale, Eastern Cape, drew about 10 000 attendees.

The event marked the first coronation of the amaXhosa king in 50 years, as the last coronation of a Xhosa Monarch, King Xolilizwe Sigcawu took place in 1965.

We learn that the event was attended by high profile guests, among them being our SA President, SA Cabinet ministers, judges, premiers, MECs, members of the clergy, SA kings and queens, representatives from all houses of traditional leaders and Contralesa, and also, representatives from Britain, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Indonesia, Botswana, Libya and Zimbabwe.

Of important note is the presence of leaders of the Forum of Kings, Sultans, Sheiks, Chiefs and Princes of Africa, which was founded by Sigcawu in 2008, the Institute of Royalty and African Diaspora.

This event presented an opportunity to educate the general public about norms, values, customs, rituals, traditions and protocols of the cultural dynamics of the African Royalty.
